This year´s conference will focus on 100 years of polymer
science – from past to future.
The field of macromolecular science will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2020. Within this century, polymers have greatly changed human life, based on the pioneering macromolecular hypothesis of Hermann Staudinger. Innovations in the synthesis and characterization of many different classes of polymers have been accompanied by an in-depth understanding of the behavior of polymers in solution and in bulk. Even today the field is still growing, and numerous scientific key developments took place only in recent years. New application areas are being generated and industrial products are continuously improved. On the other hand, there are also pressing challenges for current polymer science, including issues related to recycling and the eventual fate of polymer materials, as well as renewability and waste reduction. Pending key issues of mankind may profit from polymer based solutions in the future, such as energy storage and conversion, new therapies for diseases, and even approaches to a “cyclic economy”.
Consequently, this event will focus on the celebration of 100 years of polymer science, laying the foundation to deal with present challenges and enabling future solutions. For this purpose, current and future tasks will be discussed and analyzed in detail during the conference. We are delighted that internationally renowned speakers accepted our invitation to discuss past, present and emerging future topics of macromolecular chemistry and physics. As a special highlight, a lecture dedicated to Hermann Staudinger and his life will allow the participants to have a look into the early days of polymer science. Finally, a future forum will be organized in order to discuss current and future challenges of the field and to address possible solutions.
